Hall of Dreams

Hall of Dreams

In loving memory of Ani H. Manjikian who is survived by her dreams.

In January 2018, I received a phone call from one of my two best friends. Ani Manjikian (pronounced Aw-nee Man-jee-ken) told me she had been diagnosed with cancer, yet again. This would be her fourth run with cancer. Although all her major organs were riddled with cancer, Ani’s optimism, spirit, and strength left me certain she would fight it off in a couple months and be back in time for CyCon. I continued with plans for CyCon as usual making notes to “review with Ani when she is better.”

On Sunday 3 March 2018, Ani passed away.

I couldn’t believe it. I called her right away and felt the devastation as the surrealism set in. I was crippled and lost. This devastation was the exact thing I would need Ani for.

On 4 March 2018, I learned of Ani’s passing through a post on Facebook. I thought of her dog,  Maggie. I was ready to drive from New York to Washington to get her if needed. I thought of Ani’s books. All her current works in progress. One book was currently with beta readers. Another was with an editor. What about all her stories? What about her websites? What about her dreams? I needed to talk to Ani’s family, and I couldn’t. I had no idea what their names were or who they were. I did know she had two sisters, but I had no way of getting a hold of “The sister of Ani living somewhere in California.”

It was by a small miracle, a chance of kindness that Tamara, Ani’s sister, took the initiative to call everyone in Ani’s contact list in her phone. On 6 March 2018, Tamara called me despite her grief. Maggie the Dog was fine and would be adopted by Ani’s mother. All her precious things were being carefully wrapped. Tamara managed to get through all 300 contacts repeating 300 times, “Ani died of cancer on 3 March 2018.” I can’t imagine the agony of having to say that 300 times.

“What about her books?” I asked.

Tamara said she had no idea how to continue with Ani’s dream. I smiled. I knew. Tamara passed the book rights and Ani’s website over to Brain to Books so I can keep it going for her. Royalties all go to Ani’s family, but the marketing all comes to Brain to Books. We are carrying this torch for Ani who passed before she could fulfill her dream.

The Hall of Dreams is a collection of books written by authors who are no longer with us. Authors who passed and left their dreams with us. Welcome to Ani’s Dream: The Hall of Dreams.

Author: Ani H. Manjikian

Born and raised in Southern California, the diagnosis of hydrocephalus at birth should have killed Ani, or worse, left her blank to the world. Her strength of spirit, parents’ love, and a miracle all combined to overcome that prognosis within nine months. From this almost impossible beginning, she has developed into all-around person with the technical knowledge and analytical mind of a programmer, creative and detailed orientation of a writer/editor, and aesthetic instincts of a designer/photographer.

Ani’s writing career started when a friend in Cyprus made her promise to stop throwing away her writings because she thought they weren’t good enough. After returning to the States, Ani set out to finish a single horse story and tried to get it published. However, the book, like the writer, needed time to mature.

While perfecting her craft, Ani graduated from San Francisco State with a BA in Industrial Arts and worked several jobs from retail sales to human resources project management. Her innate ability to learn new computer programs with minimal instruction combined with her need to be creative led to her current long-term stint as a web designer and developer.

The book, meanwhile, spawned several siblings until there was enough for a series. Not knowing what to call it, Ani turned to another friend who suggested a word play on the books main themes of horses, space, family, and heroes. With two published books under her belt, Ani continues to work on Stars of Heros plus exploring several other ideas.
